Born in Washington, DC, band leader, Elijah J. Woodward was raised in Richmond, VA, where he attended Richmond Public Schools. It was at J.B. Fisher Elementary where Elijah began learning to play the saxophone under the tutelage of longtime music educator and local jazz favorite, Glennroy Bailey. Throughout elementary and middle school, Elijah was selected by his band directors annually to participate in the RPS All City Bands. At his 8th Grade Culmination he was awarded the inaugural Duke Ellington Award for Musical Excellence by Micah Lee, his then band director at Lucille M. Brown Middle School.

In the Fall of 2018, Elijah auditioned and was accepted to the famed Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, DC. He quickly began to gel with other students who, like Elijah, are also members of the Washington Jazz Arts Institute under the direction of famed jazz musician and educator, Davey Yarborough. It was through this connection and the love of jazz, that “The Fixins” was formed.

Since forming in early 2019, Elijah & The Fixins has been the featured performers for the Washington, DC Hall of Fame Society Awards Gala, The United States Department of Agriculture’s inaugural “Got Diversity” event and they have performed multiple times for the monthly “Jazz and Verse” event at Bus Boys and Poets Restaurant in DC.

Elijah is excited to bring his band back home to Richmond for the very first time and team up with his mentor for this worthy cause! Elijah & The Fixins is Elijah J. Woodward on saxophone, Loren Littlejohn on trumpet, Laesio Littlejohn on bass, and Jabulani Clay on drums.

Hungry for Music is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that collects used musical instruments and donates them to underserved youth with a hunger to play. They believe that “by sharing instruments and musical experiences that children who would not otherwise have the opportunity can experience a kind of freedom and self-discovery that is often stifled in an atmosphere of economic hardship.” For more information on how you can get involved with Hungry For Music, visit them at www.hungryformusic.org.
