Lunch Break Science: COVID-19 and Smell Loss

Date(s)

  • March 11, 2021 | 12:00 pm

The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed millions of lives worldwide and led to considerable short and long-term health consequences for survivors. One common symptom reported in a wide number of cases is the debilitating loss of smell and taste.

Sense of smell is one of the more overlooked senses, despite its importance in many aspects of our day to day lives. Losing your sense of smell and taste can do more than just keep you from enjoying your favorite meal, it can also leave you vulnerable to dangers such as fire, food poisoning and much more. While most regain their sense of smell over a short period of time, even mild cases of COVID-19 infection can cause long-term or permanent damage.

Dr. Evan Reiter of the VCU Smell and Taste Center will take your questions live and discuss what is known so far about loss of smell associated with COVID-19 infection, how it might affect our daily lives and what we can do about it.

What: “COVID-19 and Smell Loss: When We Can No Longer Wake Up and Smell the Coffee,” presented by Evan Reiter, MD, Medical Director of the VCU Smell and Taste Disorders Center
When: Thursday, March 11, 12 – 12:45 pm
