Biographies on the Musicians
Dale Payne-A native Virginian and an aspiring songwriter-having two songs published with a Nashville company, Courts Of Kings-Dale has crossed over into many musical genres since first picking up the guitar at age 14. His musical background has included being lead singer and lead guitarist in a southern rock band, playing power country and 70’s pop, to acoustic solo, duos, and trios. He was involved in a very limited tour with “Tecia And The Yademos Band” in the 1980’s. He was the founding member of the acoustic vocal trio, “Hearts & Bones” in the early ’90’s. Through it all, coming back to where his true identity lies-as a singer and acoustic guitar player who has a passion for practicing the art of vocal harmony.
Dale has done some studio work in Richmond including backing vocals to Dave Pollard’s duo, “Patchwork”. He has been singing with his wife Vickie Payne for the better part of 32 years. Greatest musical influences are singer/songwriters of the 70’s such as John Denver, James Taylor, and Cat Stevens
Vickie Payne-A “Tar-Heel” by birth, Vickie grew up around home grown Virginia bluegrass. Weekends were spent listening to her Dad and friends pick and sing all the bluegrass and country classics. Her first performance was at the age of 5 singing “These Boots Are Made For Walking”. Unable to reach the microphone, she found standing on a chair gave her the lift she needed.
Vickie has performed vocal choirs and won numerous awards throughout her middle and high school years, being selected for local and regional honor choirs. Her greatest musical influences include Karen Carpenter, Linda Ronstadt, and Stevie Nicks. Vickie met Dale (her future husband) in high school and they have performed in many musical ventures over their last 32 years together, most notably as co-members of “Hearts & Bones”.
Throughout her musical career, Vickie has enjoyed many musical styles and has lent her beautiful voice to lead and harmony vocals from the edgy rock and roll of Pat Benetar and Ann Wilson to the tender vocals of Ann Murray and Allison Krauss. She has honed her craft as a true lover and purveyor of vocal harmony adn is usually the percussionist behind the sound in the acoustic projects she has engaged in. She has done studio work for local songwriters and appears as a backing vocalist on the “Patchwork” CD.
Dave Pollard-Dave began performing in Charlottesville, Va. in 1977. Initially performing cover material in area clubs, Dave moved to Richmond, Va. in 1980 and subsequently teamed with Barry Charlton to create the duo Patchwork. Patchwork has performed 6000+ shows since that time. In 1994, Patchwork released a 10 song CD, including 5 original tunes from Dave. In 2000, Dave released his first solo CD, “Ocracoma”. This CD earned him “Songwriter Of The Year” from VOCAL (The Virginia Organization Of Composers And Lyricists) in 2000, and “Recording Artist Of The Year” in 2001. In 2003 Dave received honorable mention in The John Lennon Songwriting Contest for one of his newer compositions, “Shattered Chains”. In 2005 Dave was the Winner of The Flat Rock Music Festival Songwriter Competition in North Carolina. Dave’s new release, “Perfect Poetry” was released in February 2007.
Dave is still involved with Patchwork, usually playing once a month.
In January of 2009, Dave joined with Dale and Vickie Payne to form the trio “Triad”. Beginning with Dale and Dave getting together to try some duo work, it soon became apparent that the vocal experience they shared in the early 90’s in the studio working together on the “Patchwork” CD was way too much fun to pass up now. The trio has been rehearsing and performing since January ’09, playing venues in Richmond, Ashland, Charlottesville combining classic 70’s hits with original songs that provides a very diverse range of material.
