The true story stirs memories and inspiration

"Beautiful: The Carole King Musical" playing at Virginia Repertory Theatre, Richmond.

Transport yourself to 1958 Brooklyn, as a 16-year-old tells her mother that she’s going to Manhattan to sell a song to a big music publisher – then she goes, despite her mother’s dissuasion. Follow the young Carole into Manhattan, where she sells her first song, meets a good-looking lyricist, and continues to make musical history. While her story is not without bumps, it’s filled with music. You, as part of the audience of “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” can feel the earth move as the music stirs your memories and soul.

“Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” tells the inspirational story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with Gerry Goffin to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she made more than beautiful music: she wrote the soundtrack to a generation.

This jukebox musical contains a stunning array of beloved songs written by Gerry Goffin/Carole King and Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil—including “I Feel the Earth Move,” “One Fine Day,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” and the title song, “Beautiful.”

The Virginia Rep regional premiere of “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” features celebrated local actress Grey Garrett as King. Garrett’s other Virginia Rep appearances include Sibella in A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder and Tanya in Mamma Mia!

The Virginia Rep performance at the November Theatre runs through Aug. 6. Tickets can be purchased online at VA-Rep.org or by calling the Box Office at 804-282-2620.
