Date(s)

  • October 2, 2020 | 7:30 pm

Join the BHMVA for another great virtual jazz concert featuring James “Saxsmo” Gates! As a saxophonist, Saxsmo has a bell-like tone and his passion for jazz oozes out with every note he plays. A native Richmonder, Gates has played and traveled extensively in the United States and abroad and he has performed with numerous artists including Joe Kennedy, Jr., Dizzy Gillespie, Walter Davis, Jr., Roberta Flack, Marvin Gaye, Larry Carlton, Jeff Lorber, Alex Bugnon, Patrice Rushen, and Lonnie Listen Smith. Saxsmo credits the forefathers and Masters of Jazz for his musical foundation and passes it along every chance he gets by serving as a teacher and instructor of jazz.

The concert is free, all donations are welcomed, and will benefit three worthy organizations – the Black History Museum, 725 Arts & Culture, and Trumpeting for the Arts.
