“I Carried a Watermelon” at the 43rd Annual Carytown Watermelon Festival
“Dirty Dancing” fans remember Baby’s cringey words when she first met Johnny. The home of the film’s production will be at the iconic RVA Watermelon Festival, offering festivalgoers the chance to win two tickets the Dirty Dancing Days Summer Festival (Aug. 16, at Mountain Lake Lodge, with dance lessons, watermelon racing, costume dance party, trivia contest, and much more).
The Carytown Watermelon Festival features 80 musicians, more than 100 exhibitors, kids’ activities, food vendors, and lots of watermelon.

“The future of bluegrass” twines innovation, tradition, and excellence into a unique musical experience. The young musician has made a name for himself in the world of American Stringband music. Growing up less than a mile away from the legendary guitarist Doc Watson, Purcell was steeped in Appalachian Old-Time and Bluegrass traditions from an early age.

Defiant Spirits: Exploring the Legacy of Clementina Rind
This inspiring woman took over her husband’s printing office upon his death, and in 1766 became Virginia’s first female printer and newspaper publisher. She printed Thomas Jefferson’s “A Summary View of the Rights of British America” and published the widely read “Virginia Gazette.” Her printed work was distributed and vigorously debated in Virginia’s taverns and public houses. The presentation, in conjunction with Virago Spirits, explores tavern culture and its importance in the political climate of the day and the beverages enjoyed by our Founding Fathers.
