Several ways to see model trains during the holidays


The holiday season presents the perfect time for all-things model trains. Here are just some of the many opportunities to relive the nostalgic experience around town. (Boomer lists these events in no specific order.)

  • For a weekend full of bells and whistles, visit the Science Museum of Virginia Nov. 25 – 27 for their 39th Annual Model Railroad Show. Tickets: $14. For more info and a schedule, visit here or call 804.864.1400.
  • Peak at scenes and iconic buildings such as the Broad Street Station (now the Science museum) from the City of Richmond in a display at the Richmond Railroad Museum. The Old Dominion Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society Inc.’s model will be open Saturday and Sundays Nov. 26 through Dec. 18 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
  • Check out the model trains at Lewis Ginter Bontanical Gardens during their GardenFest of Lights from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. Nov. 25 – Jan. 9.
  • Marvel at a display featuring more than 10 trains with sceneries of an amusement park, snow village, farm scene and more at Bevell’s Hardware in Blackstone, Virginia. The display is open from Nov. 25 through Jan.15. For more information, visit the hardware store’s website.
