Virginia Folklife Celebration

July 7, 5:30 to 8 p.m., and July 8, noon to 4 p.m., at the Library of Virginia, Richmond

Documentary screenings, diverse live folk music, artifacts, activities, and more, highlighting the commonwealth’s evolving folklife heritage. The event welcomes some of the finest traditional musicians and craftspeople in the commonwealth.

Gesneriad Flower Show and Plant Sale

July 7, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and July 8, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Westin Richmond Hotel, Richmond

What’s a “gesneriad,” you ask? The plant family contains over 3,400 species of plants and countless hybrids around the world, including the popular African violet. The Gesneriad Society holds its annual convention in Richmond this weekend, and opens its show and sale to the public. FREE – but come prepared to purchase new favorite plants!
