Raising a Toast to 250 Years of Freedom
‘The American Story: Brewed in Virginia’

Virginia’s craft brewers are pouring history into every pint, proclaiming “The American Story: Brewed in Virginia.”
The Virginia Craft Brewers Guild has joined forces with VA250, Virginia’s official commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, to inspire both locals and visitors to explore the Commonwealth’s breweries. Their goal? To reach one million new beer lovers while raising a glass to Virginia’s rich role in America’s founding story.
VA250 marks the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the Revolutionary War, and the birth of U.S. independence. It shines a spotlight on the Commonwealth’s vital part in the fight for liberty. From battlefield reenactments to museum exhibitions like the “Give Me Liberty” exhibition at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture in Richmond, organizations across Virginia are bringing history to life. And now, Virginia’s breweries, alongside distilleries and wineries, are crafting their own tribute.
Building on VA250’s proud tagline, “America. Made in Virginia,” the brewers’ version proclaims, “America. Brewed in Virginia.” The twist is more than clever wordplay—it’s an invitation to appreciate history.
At the Virginia Craft Brewers Guild’s annual gala and awards program on Aug. 11, 2025, the Guild rolled out its partnership with VA250 under the aptly named “Pintriot” program. This initiative connects modern beer lovers to centuries-old brewing traditions, starting with a little-known fact: one of Jamestown’s very first “help wanted” ads was for a brewer. The history is summarized in a video entitled “The American Story: Brewed in Virginia.” The Guild plans to share more history, possibly working with Virginia beer historian Lee Graves to ensure accuracy. Brewing, it turns out, is older than the Commonwealth itself.
A revolutionary beer trail
Breweries can sign on to the “Declaration of Beerdependence” to become official VA250 commemorative partners, earning a place on the Craft Beer Revolution Beer Trail. With support from Virginia Tourism, the trail will guide beer enthusiasts to historic flavors and hometown favorites across the state.
Collectibles and creativity
Beer lovers can snag quarterly releases of Virginia Craft Beer Collector swag, like limited-edition shirts, hats, and creative keepsakes.
The Guild is also hosting the Virginia Craft Beer Graphic Design Award contest, in partnership with the Fans of Virginia Craft Beer Facebook group, to celebrate top-notch branding from local breweries.
A toast to traditions brewed in Virginia
A collaboration beer will toast history: brewed with native ingredients and inspired by traditional styles, an authentic taste of Virginia’s brewing roots. Point-of-sale promotions will help shoppers spot Virginia-made beers on store shelves, making it easier to choose local.
Brewers can also become commemorative partners with VA250 directly, for even greater exposure.
From past to pint glass
By weaving Virginia’s Revolutionary history into today’s vibrant craft beer culture, the Guild and VA250 are offering a marketing campaign through a drinkable history lesson. Visitors can taste the flavors of tradition and innovation, support local businesses, and join in the celebration of a story that began 250 years ago and continues to unfold in every Virginia pint poured.
