Remembering Popeye’s 70th Anniversary on Television
Entertainment across the generations
On September 2, 2026, the Popeye theatrical cartoon series celebrated the 70th anniversary of its television debut (1956). The success of these 234 films cemented the adult hosted children’s format. Nearly every television station in the country had an Admiral, Clown, Captain, Mayor, Cousin, Sailor, Cowboy/Cowgirl or Uncle hosting the sailor’s adventures. These programs garnered huge ratings and massive audience participation. For example, it was reported in The Daily Courier from Connellsville Pennsylvania, Captain Jim’s Popeye Club’s membership reached 44,000 on April 18, 1959.
Local personalities hosting the sailor’s adventures became beloved figures to children. These included; Uncle Gus Bernier, Walter ‘Salty’ Brine, Sailor Bob Griggs, Tom Hatten, Cousin Cliff Holman, Mike May, Sally Starr and Rex Trailer.
This children’s show format lasted well into the 1980’s. The cartoons, without hosts, also played on independent television stations.
The Popeye theatrical shorts, produced by Paramount Pictures, remain the longest running animated series for theaters (1933 to 1957). According to the June 11th, 1956, edition of The Morning Call from Allentown, Pennsylvania, Paramount Pictures was negotiating the sale of the Popeye shorts to television for 1 and a half million dollars.
The theatricals currently air on Me TV, Me TV Toons, DVD and You Tube. Presented are articles and advertisements representing a gentler time in children’s programming with Popeye the Sailor.
