Looking for a meaningful road trip with a built-in sense of purpose? Pennsylvania is inviting travelers to explore how the state’s history has impacted the U.S. Highlighting the nation’s 250th anniversary, the Highway of Heroes trail links six significant national historic sites.

Highway of Heroes destinations

The Highway of Heroes trail follows the path of the historic Lincoln Highway across Pennsylvania’s southern tier. The route connects six destinations that tell a sweeping story of American history, from the country’s founding to modern-day resilience. Each stop reflects a different chapter – Revolutionary beginnings, Civil War turning points, presidential leadership, and the legacy of Sept. 11.

  • Independence National Historical Park
  • Valley Forge National Historical Park
  • Gettysburg National Military Park
  • Eisenhower National Historic Site
  • Flight 93 National Memorial
  • Fort Pitt Museum
  • Lincoln Highway Experience (bonus site)

The destinations are permanent, but the trail is a yearlong program that offers added incentive to visit all six: sign up for the trail for free, then visit all six locations to receive a commemorative set of challenge coins and a display case. Participants explore at their own pace, in any order.

If you’re short on time, a visit to the Lincoln Highway Experience can substitute for one of the six stops.

Whether you tackle it in one extended trip or return over several seasons, the route offers a chance to connect the dots between places that helped shape the nation. Travelers will encounter stories tied to the French and Indian War, the American Revolution, the Civil War, and pivotal moments of the 20th and 21st centuries

The initiative, developed by tourism partners and historic sites across Pennsylvania, coincides with the commonwealth’s role in the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States. It’s both a history lesson and an invitation – to travel, reflect, and experience the places where the American story unfolded.

The program continues through March 26, 2027. For details, planning information, and sign-up options, visit pahighway.com.
